Bunyard ID classification Tables

Bunyard presented an apple ID methodology in his 1920 book on fruit : “A handbook of hardy fruits more commonly grown in Great Britain”. He described his approach, p11-14, which classify apples according to sweetness/acidity and general skin characteristics into one of seven tables. Within each table the varieties are organised according to the shape and when the apple is at the middle of its usable season.

We have found these tables very useful over many years. Those of you who’ve brought apples to local shows may recall that some photocopies used by our ID-ers have are beyond just dog-eared!

Well we’ve added to the Bunyard varieties especially with varieties that have more frequently been brought in for our attention, that’s more of the Welsh and Marches area varieties. These are available for your use via the links:

  • Table I Lord Derby & Table II Granny Smith
  • Table II Lanes Prince Albert
  • Table III Peasgood’s Nonsuch
  • Table IV Golden Noble
  • Table V Worcester
  • Table VI Blenheim and Cox’s Orange Pippin
  • Table VII Reinettes
