Orcharding and Related Courses

Courses run by MAN

Thursday 29th September. The first identification session of the 2016 series will take place at The Harp, Glasbury, from 10.30 am until 3pm. We will be dealing with the unknowns from the Malvern Autumn Show and, if time allows, looking at a range of “codlins”. Any new folk who are interested are welcome to join the regulars. Coffee will be provided and lunch is available at The Harp.

Saturday 11th February, or Sunday 12th February 2017 (weather dependent). Winter Pruning Course led by Paul DavisPaul Davis ( We’ll begin at 11:00 and finish about 15:00 or when enthusiasm diminishes. The course will be restricted to 12 people. Paul will explain the objectives of winter pruning, provide guidance notes and give a demonstration of pruning at MAN’s Tredomen Court orchard. You may then carry out guided pruning on the trees to gain a wider variety of ‘hands on’ experience. Whilst MAN will be providing pruning equipment for the course you are welcome to bring your own. Lunch will be taken at a nearby café/ restaurant. The fee is £15 for members, £20 for non-members. (The cost of lunch is not included in the course fee). There are no toilet facilities except at lunch time. Please contact Daniela at to confirm a place before sending in your booking form. If the weather is inclement we have an alternative reserved four weeks later, Saturday 11th with alternate Sunday 12th March.

Saturday 25th February 2017 10:00 - 15:00 Grafting Course led by Paul Davis at Cusop Village Hall, HR3 5RW, Grid reference SO 23340 42362 with a light lunch taken at a local pub or café in Hay-on-Wye (Lunch is not included in the course fee). This is the fifth year for running the successful and enjoyable course. All equipment, four rootstocks and many scions will be available to choose from; you are welcome to bring your own equipment (secateurs and grafting knife) and graftwood if you wish. Bring your lunch or enjoy it in a local Pub. The course fee is £30 for members, £40 for non-members. As places are limited to about a dozen, please contact Daniela at to confirm a place before sending in your booking form.

Saturday 11th March, or Sunday 12th March 2017 Alternate dates for the Pruning Course.

One day in Summer MAN are intending to run a Summer Pruning course for June/July 2017. Details will be posted on the Website and available on request to Daniela (as above).

Gloucestershire Orchard Group

GOG are holding pruning, budding and grafting training events throughout the year.

Cider Making

Peter Mitchell, formerly of Core Food and Drink, gives courses on cider making. Full course details are available on his website.

The Pershore Group of Colleges

Pershore College, now part of Warwickshire College, advertise a number of courses. These include Amateur Fruit Juice and Cider Making, Commercial Apple Juice Production, Commercial Cider Production, Fruit Tree Pruning and Traditional Orchard Management. Tel 01386 551143/ 551224.

The Royal Horticultural Society runs events at Pershore College. Some of these events are relevant to orcharding such as the workshop Fruit Tree Pruning in November 2012. Note that these courses are open to non-members of the RHS (although the fees are then higher).
