Construction of a Stock Proof Cage

On February 12th 2005 MAN members helped at a tree planting work party at Turnastone Court. The trees were planted in a field which will be grazed by sheep and which will have cattle passing through it and so needed some protection.

Here is a newly planted standard apple tree - a chewy target for a passing sheep.

MAN Network Co-ordinator Sheila Leitch ties a tree to a supporting post. Volunteers show how to use a manual post thumper to set up the corner posts of a stock proof cage.

Post thumping is a lot easier with some mechanical assistance....

The finished article. At 6 foot square it is proof against grazing sheep and passing cattle (but not against cattle permanently pastured in the field). Note the barbed wire running at both the top and bottom of the wire.
