Pint Pear from The Herefordshire Pomona.

Ray Boddington receiving a copy of Bulmer's Pomona

Ray Boddington, on left, Chairman since the formation of Marcher Apple Network, receiving a copy of Bulmer's Pomona for MAN's library from Clarence Attfield, one of our members, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Network, when we held an Apple Day event at the Shire Hall, Hereford. This lovely book is of particular interest to the recently formed Cider Apple and Perry Pear Sub-group. To quote from the introduction:- “This Pomona, a successor to earlier Pomonae, has been produced to celebrate the centenary of H. P. Bulmer Ltd, which was founded in 1887. It identifies the most successful cider apple varieties propagated since The Herefordshire Pomona was published between 1876 and 1885 - varieties which have been and are currently prized by cider makers for regular cropping, resistance to disease and the excellence of their juice. They are described by Ray Williams, B.Sc., a cider pomologist for thirty-five years at the University of Long Ashton. The life-sized colour illustrations are by Caroline Todhunter.”
